What is this dance of the homely, reflective wallflower cousin of the spellbinding chanteuse whose sequins glint in gazing eyes from the dark corners?

Charm Offensive emerged initially from witnessing the electric charisma and audacity so epitomized by improvised solos at traditional Dakarois sand-strewn neighborhood parties, nightclub soirees at 3am, rehearsals of numerous Dakarois and Conakrois ballets blooming in urban corners. The dancers and the equally formidable drummers and singers who killed the crowds (and killed me) offered embodied, highly concentrated serenades which served as unlikely mirrors.

I cannot be that which charms me.

That gap evokes questions of my own artistic and cultural heritage(s). Of inheritance. Of profound African contributions and legacy (inclusive of the trauma) to American-ness. Of watery lines of the African diaspora, and the quietly persistent songs at the bottom of the ocean. Of tourism, appropriation and “ownership.” Of wellsprings of innovation and experimentation embedded within tradition. And of gaps and losses: ancestral, personal, colonial, cultural.

How do silent negotiations occur within this patchwork body? What is lost—or transformed or given or broken— in translation? Make wishes into this gap. This is where I begin.

Et si, de nouveau on tentait de défaire quelques images ? Mind the gap ! pourrait bien se traduire par Attention à l’espace ! La danse pourrait aller chercher de nouvelles étendues et s’écarter encore légèrement de ce que l’on attend d’un spectacle. Elle entrerait en matière... Elle témoignerait de visions singulières. L’envie de partage se trouve à cet endroit - jubilatoire.
